Viruses normally infect computers systems through the Internet generally when the users clicks to download or install something. Avoid installing anything from the Internet unless you are confident upon your actions.
You can easily infect your computer when surfing if you stuble upon an 'infected site' so it is best to avoid unknown sites.
Most programs installed on your computer like to obtain your permission to connect to the Internet so that they can update themselves. This 'conduit' from your PC to the Internet can be exploited by some viruses and hackers so please remove any programs from your computer that you no longer use.
If you computer is infected then chances are it will try and infect your friends and contacs as well. If you know your computer to be infected try to heal your PC by performing a virus scan and delete. This will keep bith you and your friends safe.
Some viruses can steal images from your webcam so please ensure that you dont do anything infront of your PC that you wouldn't do in the street! Pay special attention to children and monitor their surfing habits by checking their history regularly. Warn them about their webcam and cover it up whilst it is not used.
