Should I buy a Laptop or a Desktop? If you are intending to use your computer away from your desk then you need a Laptop. If you intend to work from a desk then a desktop will be more reliable and more powerful.
A reason people give for buying a laptop is 'remove all those wires'. A word of caution your battery technology is not great and you will soon need to plug in your power adapter during most of its use. You will still connect leads to use your iPod, printer and your mouse if you use them.
Advantages: Portable and relatively descrite. Still works for a while during a power cut. Disadvantages: Less performance for your money, upgrades expensive, repairs difficult, shorter life span, attractive to theives, less reliable, more difficult to control without a full size keyboard and mouse.
Summary: If you need portability go for a laptop, it is nice to be able to use your computer in various locations around the house. Be mindful of the disadvantages and expect to see problems after about two years and use it with loving care. If you want power go for a desktop.
